i am doing a project on how what automobiles do to the air. like the pollution and i need ideas on how we can do stuff with our cars (besides just saying "walk"). help me out please!

I’m assuming that you are talking about making today’s cars pollute less for the average person.

Make sure the air filters are clean. The better a car can breath, the less fuel it takes.

Keep the cars well tuned up. The better it runs, the less fuel

Keep the tires inflated to proper specs. Under inflated tires cause more drag/friction on the road causing more fuel to be burnt.

Keep the front and rear wheel alignment up to specs. Improper alignment causes the tires to drag on the pavement, more fuel usage.

Drive with the windows rolled up as much as possible. Open windows cause air resistant causing more fuel usage.

Use the air conditioner as little as possible. It takes 25 to 35 horsepower or more to use the air unit, horsepower usage equals fuel usage.

Use a few electrical features as possible including lights and radio,fans. Using anything electrical causes the alternator to kick in, another 25 to 45 horsepower while it’s charging.

Keep the car body’s clean and free of mud and snow. Anything on or hanging under the car causes wind resistance and additional weight causing more fuel to be used.

Keep the inside of the car and trunk clean and free of excess junk. Junk adds up to more weight the car has to pull around and less fuel mileage.

Don’t use remote starters, get in ,start it up and on cold days, drive slowly till it warms up. Idling to warm the car up is a waste of fuel and the most inefficient time that an engine runs. A gas engine needs to be 180 plus degrees before the rings and gaskets and seals expand to their proper sizes. Before that, you get a lot of "blow by" wasting unburnt fuel. Slowly driving the car warms the engine up faster with less waste.

Shut it off as soon as you get to your destinations.Idling is nothing but a waste. Unless you need to leave your lights and flashers on say for an emergency, shut it off.

Plan your trips so you take the most direct route without backtracking.

Group as many errands as you can to make as few trips as possible.
